10MMM Background

Aim:
10MMM aims to give young people in the Southern Grampians opportunities for self expression , and a voice in the community, to help curb the effects of social isolation.

Evidence of Need

  • Rural young people’s health and welfare status is significantly poorer than their urban counterparts
  • Major survey of young people in the Southern Grampians in 2001, indicated a need for more non-sporting activities
  • Higher suicide rates, lower education, poor mental health isolation and lack of transport options makes participation difficult

10MMM Timeline

Foundation For Young Australians Springboard Grant

10MMM (Multi Media Mayhem) commenced on August 22, 2002 after receiving a Springboard Grant from the Foundation For Young Australians.

Western District Health Service (the lead organisation), in partnership with Southern Grampians Adult Education and RMIT Hamilton successfully obtained the grant from over 350 entries nationally and was one of only 6 projects to be funded in 2002.

10 MMM was officially launched at RMIT, Hamilton March 2003 by Ms. Ann Barker, MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Training and Higher Education with over 60 people in attendance.

With Springboard Grant 10MMM developed:

  • An Action Group of 10 young people
  • A Steering Committee of various community and business members
  • An interactive website ( www.10mmm.com)
  • A Quarterly youth magazine called ‘Purple Couch’
  • Radio experience through Mixx FM
  • Digital Storytelling Workshops with Lab.3000
