Steering Group

The Steering Group takes responsibility for the leadership and business associated with the 10 MMM project. In doing this, the Steering Group are responsible for ensuring the 10 MMM project goal is met in a timely manner and within the set budget strategy. The Steering Group also provides a mentoring role for the Action Group, with specific skills and leadership being fostered. Examples of this are the radio work with MIXX FM, computer workshops with steering group members as well as learning about process, evaluation and event management. The Action Group sees the Steering Group as a sounding board for new ideas and also a safety net.

Susan Brumby-

Director Community Services
Western District Health Service (WDHS)

Sue is the Director of Community Services at WDHS in Western Victoria, a member of the executive team for the health service and manages on behalf on the community the Frances Hewett Community Centre. She is responsible for the leadership, management and strategic planning for the Community Services Division and also drives new project initiatives, including the 10 MMM (Multi Media Mayhem) program and the Rural Industries Research Development Corporation (RIRDC) Sustainable Farm Families program.

Sue believes the 10 MMM program has the opportunity to make a significant difference to young people and is already delivering on it goals due to the contribution of steering and action group members.

Before joining Western District Health Service, Sue was the Manager Primary Care and Nursing Services at Heywood Rural Health Sue previously managed Bellwyn Pastoral Co a fine wool and beef producing property for 12 years and was heavily involved in industry bodies. In this position Sue was a regular opinion column writer for Stock and Land newspaper covering topics such as rural isolation, rural health, pasture and decentralisation Previous positions included the National Steering Group of the successful MLA collaborative program Sustainable Grazing Systems ( SGS) , State Farmsmart Committee, and Sue represented Victoria at the Women in Agriculture International Conference, Washington DC, 1998.

Sue has a Diploma in Farm Management, is a registered nurse and midwife, has a Graduate Diploma in Women's Studies, Workplace Trainer Cert. IV and a Masters in Health Management (in progress). Sue is a graduate of the Australian Rural Leadership Program Course 3 and alumni of the Cranlana Program

Skills offered: Strategic development, management, facilitation, community health education within a rural context, project management.

Interests: Rural health, family, bush walking, piano, movies and red wine.

Roger Dunn
General Manager - 3HA/MixxFM

Roger is general manager of Ace Radio Network stations 3HA and MixxFM in Hamilton. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, Roger is responsible for all aspects of the stations' management.

Prior to joining the Ace Radio Network, he was a broadcast consultant working on management projects for a number of stations throughout Victoria. Previously, Roger was general manager of 3BOFM/StarFM in Bendigo which included regional responsibilites for stations located in Mildura and Mount Gambier.He has held radio management positions in Geelong, Gippsland and Bega and from 1979-89 presented the nightly "live" local news bulletin at MidState Television (now Prime) in Orange. This bulletin was networked to almost half of regional NSW.

Roger holds a bachelor degree in Applied Management and a diploma in Business Management from Ballarat University, is a Fellow of the Institute of Sales and Marketing Managment and an an Associate Fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute. He is also a Member of the Australian Institute of Management and an Affiliate of the Chartered Institute of Management (UK).

Skills offered: Practical strategy planning, media planning, financial management.
Interests: Reading, gardening, walking and travel.

Fiona Mitchell

Co-ordinator/Team Leader
School Focused Youth Service - Hamilton
Brophy Family & Youth Services

Fiona is the Co-ordinator and Team Leader of the School Focused Youth Service, Hamilton. School Focused Youth Service is auspiced by Brophy Family & Youth Services and provides services for schools and community agencies to support young people at risk. Fiona is responsible for overseeing and planning for two programs in the Hamilton area, Education Connect Program and the Rural Youth Education and Support program. Other core responsibilities of her role include management of brokerage, development of new initiatives/partnerships in the area of youth at risk and leadership and management of the School Focused Youth Service Team across the South West.

Fiona is part of the 10MMM initiative and is a youth service representative for the Southern Grampians area. Fiona is also Secretary of the Youthlink 55 network, which is a forum for professionals working with youth that meets every month across the South West Region and is a member of several other community committees.

Before commencing with School Focused Youth Service Fiona spent 4 years working with young people and volunteer care givers in 'out of home' care. The program for which she worked is called the Community Adolescent Placement Service(CAPS). CAPS provide placements for young people that can no longer live at home for a variety of reasons. Training and accreditation of the caregivers, case management, counseling and support were primary to her role. Previous to this Fiona had spent several years in Local Government and private business.

Fiona has a Diploma of Community Services (Welfare), and a Certificate of achievement with the Australian Business Excellence Framework. Fiona is currently completing a graduate certificate in business and communication.

Skills offered: Understanding of Youth issues and project development, team player, case management; diplomacy required when working in a multi-agency context; good process; works well under pressure and commitment to seeing a project through.

Interests: Reading books about Mt. Everest; drinking coffee/wine and enjoying food; going for walks with my walkman, listening to music, spending time with good friends and family.

Julie Neeson
Executive Officer
Southern Grampians Adult Education (SGAE)
SGAE is a community based adult education provider servicing Hamilton and the whole of the Southern Grampians Shire with a core value of delivering accessible, quality and timely learning in a community setting. Within this framework, SGAE is involved in bringing information technology to remote areas of the shire as well as through its Youth Programs meeting the needs of young people 13+ who have left school.

Julie has worked at SGAE for 4 years and has been involved in adult education for nearly 15 years.

Julie has a Bachelor of Commerce and has been involved in project management, administration, human resources management prior to her involvement in the adult education field.

Julie brings a range of skills to the 10MMM project as well as having a strong commitment to the project to make a difference and assist young people through the provision of the maximum opportunities to be involved and be a voice in their local community

Julie is married and has 4 teenage sons. Her interests centre on her boys and their many sporting activities and other interests, attending the gym (when time permits!) walking, reading, travelling and entertaining

MR DAVID HAWKER, MP
FEDERAL MEMBER FOR WANNON
David Hawker has been a member of Federal Parliament for the past 20 years, after being elected to the seat of Wannon in Western Victoria in May, 1983.

He currently holds the position of Chairman of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics, Finance and Public Administration. This is one of the key all-Party Committees of the Parliament and was formerly known as the Banking Committee. Currently the Committee is undertaking a major inquiry into cost shifting on to local government. In addition he is a member of the Defence Sub-Committee of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade. In his earlier role as Chairman Mr Hawker introduced the Parliamentary Armed Forces Scheme.

Mr Hawker also is currently Chairman of the Wool Sub-Committee of the Coalition Primary Industry Committee and was the Minister's representative on an industry committee looking at the problem of wool contamination. He also headed up the Firearms Consultative Committee looking into new uniform gun laws. In 1997 he chaired an all Party Steel Advisory Committee.

Prior to the election of the Liberal/National Government in March, 1996, Mr Hawker was Opposition Whip for the Federal Coalition.

During his time in Parliament David has been involved in a number of Parliamentary committees, including being elected Deputy Chairman of the Science, Industry and Technology Committee. More recently he was a member of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Transport, Communications and Infrastructure.

Mr Hawker held the position of Shadow Minister for Land Transport from May, 1990 - April 1993 and in this role he was responsible for all Federal aspects of the road transport industry, road funding, road safety and the railways.

From May, 1993 - March, 1996 Mr Hawker was a member of Coalition's influential eight-member Expenditure Review Committee as the only non-Shadow Minister. This Committee reviewed the budgetary implications of the Federal Government's policy proposals and initiatives.

In September, 1993 Mr Hawker was appointed as the new chairman of the Liberal Party's Federal Regional and Rural Committee. The Regional and Rural Committee fulfils an extremely important role as the eyes and ears of the Liberal Party in regional and rural Australia. In January 1994, he was appointed a Deputy Chairman of the Coalition Urban and Regional Strategy Task Force. This Task Force co-ordinated and focused Coalition policy development on community and economic needs.

Before entering Parliament David ran a farm in Western Victoria. Prior to that he completed an Engineering degree at the University of Melbourne.

David and his wife, Penny, live in Hamilton in Western Victoria and they have four children.

John "Skeet" McKay

Head of Hamilton Campus
South West Institute of TAFE
John has been with South West TAFE for over 10 years, teaching business law, marketing and management to Diploma level. He is currently Head of Campus and a 2003 recipient of a Churchill Fellowship to study in the UK and Canada how to better cater for rural needs in the education field. He is a Justice of the Peace and proudly represents rural areas on the 10 MMM (Multi Media Mayhem) Committee.

John has extensive experience with Youth work through Apex at local, state and national level. He worked for 12 years for people with disabilities and was successful in gaining funding for innovative programs and facilities. He is a published author on history, law, short stories and other creative devices. He has worked as a Journalist and in his youth travelled extensively overseas.

John has widespread community service and is actively involved in with several community organisations.

He lists as his greatest achievements, children Dean, Janelle and Sonia.

John or Skeet as he prefers, has a Graduate Certificate in Education (VET) and an Advanced Diploma of Management.


Skills offered: Marketing, management, humour and a strong inclination to have fun.

Interests: Rural support, especially in the Youth area, People generally, History, Genealogy, Music, Writing, Sport, Movies and red wine.

Felicity Schievenin, Initiative Manager
The Foundation for Young Australians

 

Felicity began her role as an Initiative Manager for The Foundation in September 2002. Felicity has worked in a variety of paid and voluntary roles in the youth and community sectors for approximately 10 years. Paid roles include working for the South Australian and Western Australian State Governments as a Child Protection Social Worker and in South Australia as a Youth Housing Adviser, Youth Residential Care Worker and JPET Project Officer. Prior to joining The Foundation, Felicity held the position of Coordinator of the Southern Youth Services of the YWCA of Adelaide. She has completed a Bachelor of Social Work and Certificate 4 in Workplace Training and Assessment.

At The Foundation, Felicity develops grant-making strategies and supports grant recipients of Partnership Grants 2003; Youth Led Futures - Partnership Grants with Indigenous Organisations 2003; challenge ya! 2002 and 2003; SPRiNGBOArD Grants 2002; State and Territory Grants 2002 and Youth for Youth Investments 2003 programs as well as undertaking a State liaison role for Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania.

Peter Fotheringham (Fozz)
Arts Co-ordinator
Monivae College Hamilton

 

Peter has been involved in youth welfare and programs for over 20 years and is currently working at Monivae college teaching Visual communication and design, multimedia certificate 3 and other arts subjects. He is a member of the 10MMM steering committee and was previously involved in the "Framing the future" program also operated through WDHS.

Peter started out as a draftsman and then became a business manager in the construction industry for several years before becoming a teacher at TAFE. "Fozz" now teaches at Monivae where he has been for the last fifteen years. He has assisted with, or developed several youth initiatives in Hamilton including CMC, Mig, Renew, Young MSC'S, Framing the future and others. He was the rowing coordinator at Monivae for 10 years but now coaches hockey and sometimes plays just for a change. Fozz is the producer of the school production at Monivae and occasionally teaches photography, customer relations and motivational/PD training, if he has the time.

Formal Learning - Graduate Diploma Adolescent Health and welfare, Diploma technical teaching, Associate diploma of Business, Certificate of counseling skills, Drafting, Certificate III Multimedia, Certificate 4 Workplace assessment, Certificate II retail, certificate II advanced computing.

Kaye Scholfield
Manager Community Partnerships and Projects
RMIT Hamilton
Kaye is Manager of Community Partnerships and Projects at RMIT Hamilton. Her role is to develop partnerships with community groups, or to partner with other groups to develop projects of benefit to the community. She is extremely passionate about the importance of education in building strong communities, and in enriching people's lives - especially the people and communities of rural Australia. Kaye's interest has grown considerably since she first began her involvement in education over ten years ago when RMIT Hamilton had its beginnings as an international student hosting program.

Kaye is especially supportive of programs involving young people. She would like to see many more opportunities such as 10MMM for young people to develop interests and skills that will equip them for active citizenship now and in the future.

In 2003 Kaye was Runner Up in the RIRDC's Rural Women's Award for Victoria. She is currently working on her PhD in Education. Kaye is a partner in the family farm business, and is the mother of three children.

Special interests: Family, friends, reading, music - and yes, red wine too!
Special regrets: Not enough time for the garden!
